So I thought over this for a long time trying to figure out the best way to do it. I’ve had Crystal thinking that I’m going to wait on the ring until February or so and that I am buying her a bunch of little things for Christmas, which I am. So here is the plan.
While Crystal is visiting me for Christmas Eve, her family is going to plant all of the gifts that I have already given them a week before. When Crystal opens the door to her house, there will be rose pedals going up her stairs and leading to her stocking. In the stocking is an envelope that says “Crystal Elizabeth Alred – Christmas 2005”. Inside the envelope is a card telling her that her gifts are already there waiting on her and that she must figure out the clues to find them. It is a scavenger hunt!
The clues have different gifts waiting such as a necklace, bracelet, earrings, and perfume. All of them get a bit nicer to make her think she isn’t getting anything else (a ring). The final clue leads to a gift underneath the Christmas tree. Inside the box is a professionally printed, hardbound book that I put together with Apple’s iPhoto. On the cover it says “You and Me – 2005”. On the front page it says “1 Corinthians 13”. Each page has a different verse from that chapter (Love is patient, love is kind…) and has various photos of us. The last few pages say:
“The greatest of these is…”
“Love”
“Crystal Elizabeth Alred, I Love You…”
As she flips the page, the last page says, “Will you marry me?”
That is when I hit my knee and show her the ring!
So now I just have to ask for her parents’ blessing and see if they will help me plant these clues & gifts!

Oh…what a proposal. I couldn’t have imagined anything more perfect for me. Everyone keeps saying, “This needs to be on Oprah!”. I don’t know about all that, but it was absolutely amazing! Thanks Shane for all of your heartfelt work….

I’m glad you enjoyed the proposal as I have a lot of people to thank as well for helping me! I’m just glad that everything went so smoothly and nothing was spoiled. I started sweating it leading up to that night, but it all just fell into place. I just knew I had to 1-up McDonald’s and Pizza Hut (just kiddin’ Dads!!! HAHA! ๐ ).
As for Oprah…HA! I don’t think I’m ready for the “big time” just yet. ๐
*mushy* As for my heartfelt work…you are worth it. ๐ *mushy*
awwww ๐

Oh my! Shane, you DO have a romantic bone! I am so proud of your thoughtfulness and sincerity in the proposal. You know the source of true happiness and are grounding your marriage in the most important person in your life- God. I am impressed with your creativeness and am so proud you found a girl that will help remind you of God’s love daily. She’s very special and I hope we will be able to spend some time together in the future! Treat her like a Queen and she’ll treat you like a King!!

You did it! You topped anything you ever had in that brain of yours and she definately seems worth it for putting up with you!HA HA! Your lucky and so is she to have you! God bless you both, and let me tell you from experience being married three years now, things can be hard, but God makes sure that you only take on what you can handle. Be true to one another and the only things in life you need to be the happiest couple, is God, and love and you already have those things. Goodluck to you and I hope that life only gets better for both of you!
She’s beautiful Shane! Congratulations!!!!

Thanks, Sarah!! It means a lot to hear such great advice from someone who has been through what we’re about to experience. I mean, if Adam & Eve can wing it with just themselves and God (no closet full of shoes and a gazillion different outfits) then we should be fine, right?! ๐
Wait…Adam didn’t have football Saturday in the fall either…hmmmmm.
